With American kids, the list is long how children spend their time: school, piano practice, Little League, Vacation Bible School, ballet, video games, tennis, track, television, and time with family, to name a few.
Contrast this with what many Romanian children do, and especially orphan children. The horrific images of the 20/20 broadcast, “Shame on a Nation,” which exposed the vile conditions in Romanian orphanages after the fall of Nicolae Ceausecu was shocking!
The standard of living for the Romanian orphanages is still grave despite vast improvements.
The children need help and are looking for answers. The Precept Romanian teams are giving hope and the love of Jesus Christ to Romanian children and orphans.
Summer camps are formed throughout Romania to help teach the children God’s Word through Precept Bible Studies. The lives of the children are radially being changed as they learn who God is and how He can make a radical difference in their lives.
On Sunday mornings the young students stood on stage in churches and recited Bible verses and sing songs about the truths about the names of God. The joy on their faces is such an answer to prayer, as the students radiated the truth and gave testimony to what the students have learned.
“To see the joy on all of the children’s faces is priceless. It makes all of our efforts worthwhile when you can see the transformation take place among the young adults and children. No one can truly understand this unless you can see it for yourself. It’s the power of God and His Word that makes the difference.
“We are a tool, a vessel that God uses to help impact these children and we’re grateful. We’re thrilled to see what God also did in our 2nd Summer Camp held at our Precept Romanian Training Center.
“We did whatever we could to get people there. We traveled and picked the students up in buses, cars, and some even came by train. It didn’t matter how much effort it took for them to come, they came. There were children and youth from 8 villages. We had a total of 175 including leaders. We used the theme: The Power of His Name. We had skits, praise and worship, and used the Discover 4-Yourself Precept Bible studies. The children and students shared testimonies along with scripture memorization.
“Praise God, in the 2nd camp 63 children and youth prayed to receive Jesus!
“Our study, God What’s Your Name?, was a fantastic tool to help the students begin to understand who God is. The children and youth are very open to learning truth. Many had no idea what “verse and chapter” means from the Bible. But it didn’t matter; they were eager to learn. It’s amazing to see them so hungry to learn about God and His Word.
“It’s also interesting to see the children understand in practical ways the truths they were learning. They now know, EL ELYON, The Most High God; the God who is the one in control. They also learned Bible stories and now seem to understand the importance of the life of Joseph and Job.
“Some of the students even said, ‘We’re glad to know there’s good and bad. We didn’t know there was a difference.’ It’s interesting to see how the children understood in practical ways the truths they were learning.
“One young boy who has three brothers shared why he was thankful for being at the conference. ‘I prayed all the time for our mother to come back to us, but she did not come. Our father is dead, and I was angry with God and not thankful for anything. Now I understand that God works all things for the good of those who love Him.’ This is priceless, isn’t it! To see children begin to move from a life of anger, hurt, and bitterness, to a life dependent on God.
“Another child, whose mother almost died when she was 8 years old, was afraid, sad and mad. She said, ‘Why is my mother sick?’ A 9-year old boy answered, ‘My mom died when I was 8 years old, and God allowed this to happen.’
“The leader was so touched and said, ‘You understand better than me that God is in control.’ These boys come from orphanages around this region.
“We’re so grateful for the prayers and financial support from our gracious givers. We couldn’t do the work God has called us to without the resources for these children. Pray for us as we continue to do camps all around our region.”
Far more than just a building, the Eurasia Training Center is the hub of a ministry that now flows beyond the former Soviet Bloc countries into North Africa and the Middle East.
Precept Ministries Eurasia covers more than 40 languages, including Arabic, and ministers to a population approaching one billion people.
The Kingdom work happening at the Eurasia Training Center in Romania is being duplicated at numerous other locations. On average, there are 24 Training Institutes (intensive, two-week Leadership Training Workshops) happening somewhere in the region every month. Each leader agrees to attend three two-week sessions per year for three years. As they return for each session, they are required to bring someone else along.
Led by Eurasia Directors and Romanian natives, Mia and Costel Oglice, the future of Precept Ministries in Eurasia is bright! Nearly 300,000 students are meeting in 39,000 classes, and more leaders are being trained every day to meet the ongoing demand for Inductive Bible Study in a part of the world that desperately needs to know God in a personal life-transforming way.
Creativity has always been part of the approach to ministry in Eurasia. When you come from a background where Bible study was forbidden under communist rule, creativity was a must! Today, Precept trainers and leaders are using that creativity to reach more people with the Inductive Bible Study Method.
A new project, funded through your generous support, Answering the Call is a mobile computer learning center that is projected to reach over 37,000 new people. This includes 600 leaders who will be trained to teach others basic computer skills, as well as the ability to study God’s Word inductively. We have had a computer lab at the Eurasia Training Center for several years, but this will be the first mobile lab and will alllow us to reach those who are unable to make the trip to the training center.
This past summer, we were able to print 30,000 books for areas of ministry that desperately need them. Camps, prisons, rehab centers, and churches across Eurasia were able to convene classes and provide the necessary resources. In our summer camps alone, more than 20,000 students were in attendance learning English and studying God’s Word inductively. We expect 30,000 books to reach more than 95,000 people. The majority (80 percent)of these students will be brand-new to Precept and the Inductive Bible Study Method.”
Please join us in praying for the work God is doing throughout Eurasia. We’re grateful for the generosity of individuals who support the work of Precept around the world. Countless lives are being changed, and His Word is going forth in a profound way.Donate Online Now
Back in the late 1970’s, when the Ministry was little more than Kay Arthur teaching a weekly Bible study in Atlanta, Georgia, Verdie Brady was invited to a friend’s Precept Bible Study.
“We studied the book of John,” Verdie recalls. “We didn’t have an official teacher. We just sat around the kitchen table and listened to Kay on cassette tape.” Verdie was later trained as a Precept Leader in Columbus, Georgia, by Betsy Bird. For nearly 35 years, she has been studying God’s Word inductively as well as teaching others in her own Precept classes.
“I immediately had a love for the people of that part of the world”—Verdie Brady
Verdie has been very involved in Precept’s work in Eurasia. She says, “I would go to Chattanooga for training or a conference and hear from Mia and Costel Oglice about their work in Romania.” This was when Romania was still under communist rule. “Kay would pass out names of pastors and other church leaders in Romania and ask us to send Easter and Christmas cards for encouragement,” Verdie remembers. That was the beginning of what turned out to be a lifelong ministry.
Verdie began traveling to Romania and Moldova in 1992 to help in Precept Training Institutes and youth camps. This past summer marked her 21st year of making the annual summer trek to Eastern Europe to help others learn to study God’s Word for themselves.
Not only does Verdie physically participate in Precept’s work in Eurasia, but she also supports the work financially. “I immediately had a love for the people of that part of the world and wanted them to know the Lord and study His Word, so I started giving right from the beginning,” she says. “I give to Precept because it equips you to study that which keeps you from error.”
Verdie also says that she sees the results of her giving in the “phenomenal multiplication” that is happening across the Eurasia ministry. “I know Precept is careful in how they spend the money God provides, and to me that is important. I see it. The Bible teaches us to ‘lay up treasures in heaven,’ and Precept is a great place to do that!”
We are thankful for Verdie and her faithful generosity in support of Precept’s work across Eurasia, North Africa, and the Middle East. She, along with thousands of other partners, is enabling countless people to discover God’s Word for themselves.Donate Online Now
The Eurasian Team tirelessly teaches and trains people from all across Eurasia with Precept Inductive Bible Studies. Pastors, teachers, orphans, widows, missionaries, juvenile delinquents, men, women, and children are all being equipped and changed by God’s Word. Their heartfelt dedication in ministry is making an eternal impact in the lives of people who otherwise may never have the opportunity to hear and study God’s Word!
The Eurasia Training Center held a camp for 50 juveniles and 20 guardians from three penitentiaries. Forty youth, mostly pastors’ children also participated in the study, Loving God and Others. There were 40 who prayed to receive the Lord! The guardians were also very open to the teaching they had studied. The prisoners shared how deeply grateful they were to be at the camp. Their lives had dramatically been changed through their time in God’s Word. At the end of the camp, all the youth went to a local church and participated in a program with songs, poems and testimonies of how God and His Word had changed their hearts and lives. An inmate from another prison writes:
“As I studied I was touched with the words from Matthew 5:44, 'Love those who hate you, bless and curse not, do good to those that hate you, pray for those that persecute you.’ These words were exactly for me! Living in this prison I have great need of love, forgiveness, prayer and faith. I kept trying to change things here, but without any results. I was trying in my own efforts. After I understood the truths I had studied, I asked Jesus to help me. It was only then that I could love others. Everything changed around me. The Word of God made great changes in my life!”—Romania prison inmate
