Can We Really Lean On God’s Promises? Uncovering the Faithful Heart of God in Prayer

Apr 17, 2025

Promise Maker and Promise Keeper

A promise is a beautiful thing, full of hope and commitment. We make promises time and again—from pinky promises as children to marriage vows before family and friends to a public declaration to follow Christ at baptism. But as we have all experienced, promises can often come up empty—meaningless words without any follow-through.

We humans are less than perfect at keeping our word. We make flippant promises to our children only to forget about them moments later. We overpromise at work only to have deadlines come and go. We promise our spouse that we will finally get to that chore they have been asking us to do, only to have it end up back at the bottom of our to-do list. We make and break promises almost daily.

God, too, has filled His Word with His promises. Since the beginning of time, God has spoken promises to His people—promises of blessing and protection; of healing and forgiveness; of comfort, peace, and nearness. But unlike us, God is not only a promise maker; He is also a promise keeper. God does not forget. He does not overpromise or go back on His Word. Our Heavenly Father is a God who comes through. He is a God who does exactly what He says He will do every single time.

Prayer: A Conversation with the God who Promises to Respond

Our trustworthy Father invites us into a relationship with Him through prayer. But in the middle of our doubt and distraction, we can easily wonder if our words to Him truly matter. Does God hear us? Is He really listening? Does He care?

The answers to these questions are found in His Word. Throughout Scripture, we are not only invited and encouraged to pray but are also given blessed assurance. God has made promises to us about prayer. Promises like…

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)

“Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:13-14)

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26)

These incredible promises—and even more found in the God’s Word—fuel our confidence when we approach God in prayer. We are entering into something much greater than a routine or obligation. We are engaging in sacred conversation with a Father who hears us, knows us, and promises to respond in amazing ways.

We invite you to join us in The Promises of Prayer where we will explore the steadfast truths in Scripture about God’s promises to those who seek Him in prayer. These promises are more than just words—they are declarations inviting us to trust God and lean on His faithfulness.

Together let’s seek to know God deeply and allow His promises to strengthen our hearts as we grow in loving relationship with Him—in The Promises of Prayer, available on May 1 in the Precept shop!
