“Our Father”: Fostering Intimacy with God through Prayer

Oct 22, 2024

In a pivotal moment of Jesus’ ministry, His disciples brought Him a request that remains on many of our hearts today: Lord, teach us to pray.

And in response, Jesus begins with these two simple yet profound words: Our Father.

These very words invite us into a life-changing relationship with God Himself. With them, Jesus welcomes us to call His Father, our Father. Where there once was separation between God and His people (Isaiah 59:2), Jesus bridges the gap and makes it possible for each of us to enter into relationship with our God. Our Father.

Relationships Take Work

Yet as we all know too well, relationships take work. They require effort to be nurtured. They thrive on communication, humility, and vulnerability. They are an investment of time and emotion. And our relationship with God is no exception.

Jesus not only opens the door to life-changing relationship with God, but He also shows us how to keep it ajar through prayer. Throughout the gospels, we see Jesus habitually retreat to commune with His Father, showing us the importance of this sacred conversation. And we hear His teaching as He gives His disciples the words of the Lord’s Prayer and urges them to abide in the Father and His love. For us–just as it was for them–prayer is a vital thread in the fabric of our relationship with God.

The True Purpose of Prayer

Whether you have been a Christian your entire life or have only recently started walking with Jesus, you’ve likely recognized the importance of prayer. Yet, it can so easily begin to feel rote or obligatory, losing its true meaning. Before we know it, it can become just another part of our day or an item to check off our unending to-do list.

If you have ever found yourself in this place—or find yourself there now—know that you are not alone.
