Morocco is not a friendly place for Christians.
The Islamic government actively suppresses evangelism and discipleship efforts, making it difficult for missionaries to spread God’s Word and for Moroccan believers to worship openly. Believers can’t meet in public buildings, so they meet in smaller house churches with the hopes that their neighbors won’t report them.
It is in this environment that Neama Church* in Marrakech exists. Mama Badia and her husband Dalil started this church several years ago. Dalil later suffered a brain injury and developed Alzheimer’s, so much of the load for keeping the church running fell to Mama Badia’s shoulders.
Mama Badia has twenty people living in her home that also serves as a meeting place for the church and a shelter for abused and homeless new believers. She has a vision to establish a shelter for women and to help start new churches.
But the believers in the area have a challenge: the number of believers is growing and many of these people are fresh from Muslim backgrounds, with very little knowledge of the Word of God. And as the numbers grow, so does the need for gifted and knowledgeable leaders.
Precept provides an answer to this need by offering materials and training to help equip people to teach their communities about God’s Word.
A team member from Precept introduced one of our study materials to Neama Church through a three-day Bible study conference.
That team member shared, “They were so excited about what they were able to discover by themselves from the Word of God!” The church even decided to use Precept in one of their three weekly gatherings moving forward.
Several members expressed a hunger and excitement for what they were discovering in God’s Word.
For example, a young woman named Layla found it amazing that they could uncover so many insights and treasures from the Word of God out of the small resource they were using. Rafik, a seminary student and prominent leader in the church, was amazed at how the Precept study highlighted the abundance of details in Scripture waiting to be uncovered. A gifted teacher at the church, Zahid, was excited to take the teachings they had learned and translate them into a Moroccan dialect to share with others.
The meetings were also attended by Muslim family members, with whom our team member was able to share the Gospel. One Muslim man even ate dinner with them and, when asked if he understood the things they had been talking about, expressed through misty eyes that he understood the teaching clearly and that he loved it.
A group of French missionaries visited during the conference as well and observed how the church members engaged in the Bible study. They approached our team member and offered to connect him with believers in France with Arab-Muslim backgrounds, to see if he could introduce them to the Precept method. Their leader said, “What we saw this evening is an answer to my prayers.”
This experience at Neama Church in Morocco is just a sample of what God is doing in the world through Precept—showing that when people grow in knowing God more deeply through His Word, lives change.
