Remember R.O.Y.G.B.I.V?
It’s a well-loved mnemonic device (memorization tool) to help children recall the colors of the rainbow. Decades after learning it, you can probably still recognize it and remember what each letter stands for.
When it comes to memorizing Scripture, you might find yourself frustrated or disheartened if memorization doesn’t come easily for you. You might have stopped trying Scripture memory some time ago, feeling like it just wasn’t for you.
But building a Scripture memorization habit is not only possible—it deeply enriches our spiritual growth! Jesus’ words and works during His earthly ministry demonstrate a profound and deep familiarity with God’s Word. He not only read the Bible, but He also committed it to memory! When the Pharisees tested Him, Scripture was on his lips—and likewise when His disciples had difficult questions, He had God’s Word ready to share.
Although you may never be a “natural” at memorization, there are many tools that can help you develop your Scripture memorization skills and hide God’s Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11).
Here are three of these tools to help you get started today.
Mnemonics
Just like the R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. acronym helps you recall the colors of the rainbow, mnemonics can be a helpful tool to aid Scripture memorization. By associating a Bible verse with something memorable or creating a pattern, you can make them easier to recall. For example, you could use an acronym or a catchy phrase to remember key words or concepts from a particular verse. If you’re memorizing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), you might come up with a phrase for “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,” etc. by choosing a word for each fruit—like Lucy Joins Patty Playing Games for School. This creates a mental “hook” that makes it easier for you to recall Scripture.
Fill in the Blanks
Another great technique to aid memorization is the fill-in-the-blank method. Start by writing out the verse you want to commit to memory on a card or in your journal but leave a few words missing. Then, as you try to say the verse from memory, fill in those blanks. This method encourages active recall, which strengthens your memory and helps solidify the verse in your heart. For example, start with a verse like, “The Lord is my _____; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Challenge yourself to recall the missing words without looking. Once you can, keep going, removing more words as you go, until you can remember the entire verse!

Rote Memorization
Rote memorization might seem old-fashioned, but it is one of the most effective tools for Scripture memorization. Simply put, repetition is key. The more you repeat a verse or passage, the more it becomes ingrained in your memory—and in your heart! Begin by writing out the verse and reading it aloud multiple times throughout the day. You can even repeat it while driving or walking, turning it into a prayer or meditation. The more you speak God’s Word aloud, the deeper it will root itself in your heart and mind. You could also take the verse and break it into smaller sections, committing to memory just one phrase at a time before moving on to the next. Over time, these small steps will build into a larger understanding and retention of God’s Word.
Building a habit of memorizing Scripture may seem like a daunting task, but with patience and persistence, it becomes more natural. And the benefits are too good to pass up—having God’s Word on your mind and lips throughout your day will guide your decisions, provide comfort in difficult times, and deepen your relationship with the Lord. So, whether it’s through mnemonics, fill-in-the-blanks, or simple repetition, start small and build your habit day by day of hiding God’s Word in your heart. You’ll be amazed at how it helps you know God more deeply and live differently!
