Latin, Tattoos, and the Image of God: Bryce’s Story

Oct 17, 2024

What do Latin, tattoos, and the image of God have in common?

In a word: Bryce.

Bryce didn’t even realize the extent to which he held some deeply-rooted misconceptions about his relationship with God. But those misconceptions changed when he picked up the study Known, part of the Yarrow series on identity for young adults.

Bryce says, “Upon reaching the halfway point of this study, my eyes were opened to the reality that there was a part of me that saw my identity in Christ as a weight—mostly as a responsibility.” He discovered that there was a part of him that believed that living for Jesus was simply something he had to do, not something he joyfully got to do.

This realization became the catalyst to a transformation of his beliefs about himself and his relationship with God. He was particularly impacted by studying God’s encounter with Job in Job 38.

Bryce says, “This same God that was so powerful and mighty [in Job 38], and created every single atom in the universe, also chose to create me. Not only did He create me, He created me in HIS image! He wants relationship with me.”

Bryce came to understand that God was not disappointed or angry with him. Rather, God had chosen to include Bryce as a part of His plan. Bryce says, “The idea that I am created in the image of God no longer feels like a responsibility or a weight. I am created in the image of an almighty God, and that is the most empowering thing that I could ever imagine.”

Bryce continues, “The part of me that used to say, ‘I have to do this’ now screams, “I GET to do this!”

Bryce was so impacted by these realizations that he even got the Latin translation of “image of God” (Imago Dei) tattooed on his arm. This physical mark would serve as a constant reminder of the truths he’s discovered.
